49ers Surpass 3.0 GPA For 2nd Straight Year

Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers Athletic Academic Center has announced that the 49ers cumulative GPA for the 2007-08 academic year was 3.043, the second straight year the the 49ers athletic department has produced a cumulative GPA of over 3.0. In addition, with a spring semester GPA of 3.052, the athletic department's GPA eclipsed that of the overall student body for the 24th consecutive semester.

In 2007-08, the 49ers also boasted three ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic all-Americans, the Atlantic 10 Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a league-best five Atlantic 10 sport specific Student-Athletes of the Year. Senior women's soccer star Lindsey Ozimek, a 4.0 student who was the A-10's Midfielder of the Year, was named the A-10's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year giving the 49ers one of the two Male or Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards in each of the 49ers three years in the A-10. In addition, in each of their three years in the A-10, the 49ers have produced more sport specific Student-Athletes of the Year than any other A-10 institution. The 49ers had five A-10 Student-Athletes of the Year in 2006-07 and four in 2005-06.

Meanwhile, several sports produced team records for cumulative team GPA or team semester GPA during the 2007-08 season, including golf (3.444 cumulative), volleyball (3.319 cumulative), men's soccer (3.132 cumulative), baseball (2.9 cumulative), women's basketball (2.986 cumulative), men's basketball (2.963 cumulative at end of fall `07), softball (3.210, Fall, `07) and baseball (3.0, Fall, `07). The women's tennis team posted a cumulative GPA of over 3.5 for a school-record fourth straight semester.

Twenty-three student-athletes had perfect 4.0 GPA's in the 2007 fall semester and 24 had perfect 4.0 GPA's in the 2008 spring semester. Seventy-nine 49ers were named to the A-10 Honor Roll in the fall (3.5 GPA or higher) and 80 were named in the spring. In all, 168 student-athletes received academic awards (Athletic Director's, Dean's or Chancellor's List) in the fall and 160 received academic honors in the spring.

Also of note, the Athletic Academic Center reported that 89% of the student-athletes that have exhausted their eligibility since the spring of 1993 have graduated. Fifty-one student-athletes graduated during the 2007-08 season.
