Roaring Tiger Opener Results

Appalachian State Meet Results

CLEMSON, S.C. and BOONE, N.C. -
The Charlotte 49ers track and field team opened the 2009-10 indoor season this weekend at two different events; the Roaring Tiger Opener and the Appalachian State Indoor Meet. On Friday, Isaac McReynolds won the 60m Hurdles and set a school record in the event running the event in 7.89 seconds, which was an NCAA Provisional Qualifying time.

“Isaac (McReynolds) had a fantastic opening weekend, I don’t know if we’ve ever had someone on the men’s team hit an NCAA qualifying performance in the pre-winter break meet we compete in,” stated head coach Bob Olesen. “It’s a perfect example of what we are challenging our young men’s team to do this year which is advance to the regional and national level.”

Several 49ers ran well in the short distances with Sam Jordan placing third in the 60m in 6.84 seconds and clocked a 6.81 in the preliminary round, while Demario House came in behind Jordan in fourth place. Korel Mack placed second behind McReynolds in the 60m Hurdles with his time of 8.03, while Derrick Eure took seventh in the event.

“It was a great start for Sam (Jordan) at 6.81 for 60m, last year his first time in the 60 was after winter break and this 6.81 is almost a tenth of a second faster than last year’s first time,” Olesen added.

In the 500m Dash, Charlotte placed three in the top ten as Cyrus Mojatbai took sixth in 1:08.08 and was trailed by James Savoy in ninth and Eure in 10th. Joining McReynolds as a first-place finisher was Charlotte's 4x400m team of Handy Dawes, Devonte Guyon, Reggie Hill and Darius Law, who claimed the event title in 3:18.91.

In the men's field events, Jake Deaton took second place in shot put by tossing 16.2m (53’1.75) on his final throw, while Jarryd Novotni claimed sixth place with his top throw of 13.4m (43’11.75).

On the women's side, Sirrell Butler ran to a fourth-place finish in the 60m with her time of 7.64. Lanaire Lindo took third in the 60m Hurdles with her time of 8.72 and finished ahead of Sunita Brathwaite who claimed fourth.

Shanice Jones and Cecily Young took third and eighth respectively in the 500m Dash, while Charlotte's 4x400m team finished second with a time of 3:53.34.

In the women's field events, Sharonda Bailey and Chelsea McLean finished third and fourth in the weight throw with tosses of 15.21m (49’11) and 14.66m (48’1.25). McLean also finished third in shot put. Danielle Brown leaped 5.41m (17’9) in the long jump for a fifth place finish.

At the Appalachian State meet, the Niners took home four third place finishes, two second places and one event title. Ashley Bethune claimed the 55m Hurdle event running the short distance in 8.05.

Placing second on the day was Danielle Brown in the triple jump with a distance of 12.0m (39’4.5) and Chalonda Silver in the 200m with a time of 25.27.

“Danielle’s triple jump was impressive as it was only a few inches from her indoor personal best especially because at Appalachian the distance the jumpers can run up from to jump is limited and because her other jumps in the event were nearly the same distance as her best attempt.”

Picking up third place finishes for the 49ers includes; Isaac McReynolds in the high jump with a height of 1.93m (6’4), Kortnie Coleman in the 400m dash in 58.36 seconds, Darius Law in the 400m dash with a 49.35 second time and Charlotte's 4x400m women's team in 3:58.95.

“The women’s short sprinters and hurdlers had very solid opening meets establishing good starting points to progress from this season.  Ashley Bethune had a very good weekend with personal best times in both the 55m and 55mH.  The hurdle time places her second on our top ten all time list.”

Following this weekend the Niners will have a long layover with the next meet occurring in January on the 15th, when the 49ers travel to Blacksburg, Va. for the Virginia Tech Invitational.
