Charlotte, N.C. - After a successful weekend of 13 NCAA Regional qualifying performances and three overturned school records, the Charlotte 49ers outdoor track and field team claimed three of four Atlantic 10 Weekly Awards, league officials announced Monday. Senior Tsehaye Dagnachew was named the Women's Performer of the Week, while freshmen Darius Law and Amanda Goetschius took Rookie of the Week honors on the men's and women's sides, respectively.
Dagnachew, earning her second Performer of the Week honors of the season, ran a school record and Olympic Trials B qualifier of 10:10.53 in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the Mt. SAC Relays Friday, improving her NCAA Regional qualifying performance and moving her national ranking to third. The senior, who owns the best steeplechase time in the region and the conference, finished 11th in the invitational section of the event, posting the second fastest collegiate time in a group of only three college-level athletes mixed with post-collegiates and professionals.
Law, another repeat honoree, now owns the top spot in the conference in four separate events after a strong showing at North Carolina A&T. The freshman sprinter posted an NCAA Regional qualifying time of 21.27 in the 200-meter dash, placing 11th overall and ranking fourth all-time for Charlotte, while also clocking a fourth-please 47.02 in the 400-meter dash, which would lead the A-10 if he were not already in possession of first place. Law also anchored the conference-leading 4x100m relay to a 40.86 fifth-place finish before leading off the 4x400m relay to a fourth-place finish with a time of 3:13.77.
Goetschius turned in a third-place performance in the 5,000-meter run at the Princeton Invitational Friday, clocking in at 16:53.02, narrowly missing the NCAA Regional qualifying time by just a second. She now ranks fifth all-time in school history in the event.
