CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Following up on a stellar race at the NCAA East Regional Championships, the Charlotte 49ers 4x100 meter relay squad was selected at the midnight hour by the NCAA Committee to participate in next week’s NCAA Championships at the University of Arkansas.
Charlotte’s 4x100 meter relay squad earned All-Region honors at last weekend’s region meet with a sixth-place finish. The squad of Lamarra Currie, Chalonda Silver, Sirrell Butler and Pat Springs turned in a time of 44.87 seconds, which was the best time of the year for the Niner women in the event. Charlotte will also add a pair of alternates to the team in Sunita Brathwaite and Ebonie Cunningham. It's highly probable that the alternate duo will see action in the preliminary heat of the event.
The 4x100 meter squad will be Charlotte’s lone relay at the meet and the qualification marks the second time in three years that the Niners have sent a 4x100 meter team to Nationals.
Also with the relay team’s nod, senior Lamarra Currie becomes only the second person in 49ers history to qualify for NCAAs in three events.
Currie, Silver, Butler, Springs, Aja Jackson and Darius Law will be in action starting on June 10 in Fayetteville, Ark. at the University of Arkansas as the group looks to pick up Charlotte’s 10th track and field All-American honor.
