FAYETTEVILLE, ARK. – The quest for the ultimate prize of a national championship begins today for eight Charlotte 49er tracksters who begin competition this evening at the NCAA Championships at the University of Arkansas’ John McDonnell Field.
Action gets started this morning at 11:30 a.m. with the multi-events in the men’s decathlon. For Charlotte, action will get underway at 5:00 p.m. when the track events open up with the semifinal round of the women’s 4x100 meter relay. The 400 meter relay squad of Ebonie Cunningham, Sunita Brathwaite, Chalonda Silver and Sirrell Butler comes into the meet ranked 19th among team’s competing this week.
Following the 4x100 at 5:00, senior distance runner Aja Jackson will hit the track at 5:30 p.m. for the first round of the 800 meter run. Jackson enters the meet with a season-best time of 2:05.32 which places her 13th in the event.
Senior Lamarra Currie will have a busy evening starting at 6:00 p.m. with the first round of the 100 meter dash. Currie is currently ranked 10th in the event with her 11.25 second performance from earlier in the year. If the Apex, N.C. native makes it through the first round, she will run in the semifinals which kick off at 7:30 p.m.

Between Currie’s 100 meter rounds, sophomore Darius Law will get started in first round action of the 400 meter dash starting at 7:15 p.m.. Law’s record setting 45.77 second performance from the NCAA East Region Championship puts him in 12th place overall coming into the meet. Law also qualified for the championships in the 200 meter dash, but will forego the event to focus solely on the 400.
Indoor All-American Pat Springs will open up the qualifying round of the long jump tonight at 7:30 p.m. Springs comes into the evening ranked 22nd in the nation in the event off her 20'9" leap from the East Region Championships.
Charlotte will be in search of their 10th All-American in track and field and first outdoor All-American since 2007 this week as action begins from Arkansas. For more information on the NCAA Championships and to watch the action as it unfolds click on the above links.
