Charlotte Stays Undefeated in Conference Play with 11-2 Win at La Salle

Chris Taylor Hits Homer in Fifth Straight Game in Victory

March 28, 2008

Box Score

Ambler, Pa. - Charlotte senior catcher Chris Taylor blasted a home run in his fifth consecutive game (including two last Saturday to make it six in that stretch) and sophomore designated hitter Rob Lyerly hit a homer of his own and drove in three runs in Charlotte's 11-3 win at La Salle Friday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field. The Niners improve to 19-3 this season and 4-0 in Atlantic 10 play. The Explorers drop to 4-20, 0-4 in league games.

Freshman Joe Yermal improved to 5-0 this season, and lowered his ERA to 2.02 with his career-long eight-inning performance. He scattered eight hits and two walks, while not allowing an earned run in his outing. He struck out three batters.

The Explorers scored a run in the third to take a 1-0 lead on a walk and an infield error.

Lyerly blasted his two-run homer a short right field fence to put Charlotte up for good at 2-1.

The Niners added four in the seventh, capped off by the home run by Taylor, his team-leading ninth of the season. The reigning A-10 player of the week has at least one hit and one run scored in his last nine and has an RBI in his last six games for Charlotte.

The Niners scored a pair of runs in the eighth and a pair in the ninth to stretch the lead to nine before the Explorers were able to put one across in the bottom of the ninth for the game's final margin.

La Salle starter Jamie Cowan took the loss (0-5). He lasted 5.1 innings, allowing just three runs on five hits and three walks. He struck out five.

The two teams play against Saturday at 1 p.m. and the Sunday finale has been moved back to 11:30 am.m to adjust to travel times.
