School Records Fall in Charlotte's 24-6 Win at UMass

Rob Lyerly Hits Three Home Runs in 6-for-6 Day

April 19, 2008

Box Score

Amherst, Mass. - Rob Lyerly broke one school record and tied three others with six hits, including three home runs as the Charlotte 49ers baseball team set the school record with 29 hits and blasted Massachusetts to win their fourth Atlantic 10 series of the season, 24-6 at Earl Lorden Field Saturday afternoon. Charlotte is now 29-8 on the season. With a Duquesne loss on Saturday, Charlotte is now alone atop the Atlantic 10 standings at 11-3.

Lyerly finished the day 6-for-6, with three home runs, a triple and a pair of doubles, knocking home six runs in the contest. His six hits ties Field Culbreth for most in a game, while his three homers ties Alex Saylors and James Matan (who did it twice) for most home runs in a contest. His 19 total bases bests Matan's 13 from 1997 in a game against Yale. Lyerly finished with hits in his last two at-bats on Friday, giving him eight consecutive base hits, tying Bo Robinson's mark from 1997.

Charlotte has scored a school-record 42 runs in two games so far at UMass, with 51 hits in two games. If the Niners push across six or more runs Sunday, they will set the record for runs in the three game series.

Center fielder Brad McElroy had hits in his first two at-bats to finish with three hits and two walks. He extended his career-long hitting streak to 29 straight, four shy of the school record, also held by Matan.

The Niners sent nine or more to the plate in three different innings against Minutemen pitching en route to the offensive barrage. As they did on Friday, the Niners saw each of the starting nine earn two hits or more on the day. Despite the scoring, Charlotte still left 18 runners on base.

Lyerly walked in the first, hit doubles in the third and fourth innings, and hit homers in consecutive at-bats, to center in the fifth, to right in the sixth and to left in the seventh. He finished with a triple in the ninth, before being lifted for a pinch runner in that inning.

Second baseman Corey Shaylor had four consecutive singles in the game, driving in a pair of runs and scoring two for Charlotte. Third baseman Aaron Bray had three hits and a career-high five RBI with two singles and a double.

The Niners scored in seven of the nine innings, scoring five in the fourth, and six in the sixth and ninth innings.

Starter Zach Rosenbaum lasted seven innings, scattering six hits and a walk, striking out five. He improved to 4-1 and lowered his season ERA to 2.28 in 47.1 innings. The Minutemen had five unearned runs in the fourth on a pair of Charlotte errors.

Starter Bryan Leigh took the loss for UMass, evening his record to 3-3.

The teams conclude the series Sunday at noon.

NOTES: Lyerly had a slugging percentage of 3.167 was just shy of the 3.250 slugging percentage record in a game, which Matan holds. Lyerly tied the team season-high RBI total with six, which senior catcher Chris Taylor accomplished this season, once in Friday's game. Charlotte's previous high for hits in a game was 27, against Jacksonville on March 25, 1984. The team had 58 at-bats in that game, a mark they tied in today's contest. Lyerly, Chris Taylor and McElroy all have 14 doubles to lead the team. Lyerly increased his home run total to 10 on the season, passing Taylor's .709 with a .740 season slugging percentage.
