McElroy and Shaylor Earn A-10 Weekly Honors

Charlotte Finished 4-1 This Week and Improve to 21-3 in 2008

March 31, 2008

Philadelphia, Pa. - Senior center fielder Brad McElroy was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, while freshman second baseman Corey Shaylor was named Rookie of the Week for the league, officials announced today. The Niners finished 4-1 this week, including a home win over Wake Forest and a weekend road sweep of La Salle. Charlotte is 21-3 overall and 6-0 in league play. The Niners have won their last 13 Atlantic 10 series, including eight sweeps in that span.

McElroy finished the week 9-for-20 (.450), with five RBI (including three in the 12-8 win over Wake Forest). For the season, McElroy is hitting .385 and leads the team with 10 doubles and 35 runs scored.

Shaylor hit .421 for the week. He had two hits, reached base three times and scored two runs in Charlotte's 11-8 win over Wake Forest on Wednesday. He had five hits in the three-game sweep of La Salle, including the game-winning hit, a bases-clearing single in the eighth, to put Charlotte on the lead late at La Salle Sunday in the 4-2 win. He has a season-high hit streak of six straight games.

In 21 wins this season, Charlotte has come from behind in 12 of the games to win. This week, Charlotte came back for three wins, including a dramatic win in the eighth inning against La Salle. The Niners were down 2-0 and got a bases-clearing single with the sacks full to go ahead and win the game with four runs in that frame to take a 4-2 win.

Charlotte got all four wins with two outs in that frame. This season, Charlotte has recorded 66 runs with two outs, allowing just 31 to opponents this season.

Charlotte has scored 48 of its 68 runs in the last seven games in the sixth inning or later. Charlotte scored 26 of 30 runs in the Saint Louis series and 22 of 33 games in four wins this week in the sixth inning or later.

Charlotte continues a tough road stretch, with all four games on the road this week. The Niners head to Tennessee on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. game. Charlotte then heads back to Philadelphia to take on second-place Temple in an Atlantic 10 series, beginning on Friday.
