Niners Move Up to No. 18 in Collegiate Baseball News Poll

Charlotte Continues to Earn Rankings in Multiple Others

March 31, 2008

Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers baseball team continues to build momentum and notoriety in several national polls, including the Collegiate Baseball News, which has Charlotte at the highest spot of any at No. 18 this week, which is one shy of the highest-ever ranking by any publication in team history. Last season, Ping! Baseball.com put Charlotte in the No. 17 spot at one point during the year.

Here is where Charlotte fits in all of the polls in which they are mentioned...

Collegiate Baseball News - No. 18

Perfect Game Crosschecker - No. 27

Rivals.com - No. 31 (by order of consideration)

ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll - Receiving Votes (No. 32 by vote count)

National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association - Receiving Votes

The 49ers improved to 21-3 on the year after winning their 13th consecutive series in Conference play, eight of which have been sweeps. Charlotte is one of just 16 teams nationally to reach the 20-win mark on the season.

Senior centerfielder Brad McElroy collected at least two hits in all three contests versus La Salle and earned A-10 Player of the Week honors, while second baseman Corey Shaylor was tabbed the Rookie of the Week (with Rhode Island's Chris Pickering) after batting .421 (8-for-19) over five contests with seven RBI.

In 21 wins this season, Charlotte has come from behind in 12 of the games to win. This week, Charlotte came back for three wins, including a dramatic win in the eighth inning against La Salle. The Niners were down 2-0 and got a bases-clearing single with the sacks full to go ahead and win the game with four runs in that frame to take a 4-2 win.

Charlotte got all four wins with two outs in that frame. This season, Charlotte has recorded 66 runs with two outs, allowing just 31 to opponents this season.

Charlotte has scored 48 of its 68 runs in the last seven games in the sixth inning or later. Charlotte scored 26 of 30 runs in the Saint Louis series and 22 of 33 games in four wins this week in the sixth inning or later.

Charlotte continues a tough road stretch, with all four games on the road this week. The Niners head to Tennessee on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. game. Charlotte then heads back to Philadelphia to take on second-place Temple in an Atlantic 10 series, beginning on Friday.
