Lyerly Homers His Way to Atlantic 10 Baseball Player of the Week Honors

Sophomore Slugger Belts Three Homers, Earns School-Record 19 Total Bases Saturday

April 21, 2008

Philadelphia, Pa. - Charlotte sophomore designated hitter and first baseman Rob Lyerly was selected as the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, conference officials announced Monday.

Lyerly, a transfer from Campbell University, had a week's worth of numbers in one game. Saturday at Massachusetts, the Indian Trail, N.C. native went 6-for-6, including three home runs, two doubles and a triple en route to Charlotte's record-setting 24-6 win.

Not only did Charlotte rack up a team-record 29 hits, but Lyerly set one school record and tied three others with his performance in the Saturday contest. The three home runs and six hits tied school records, while the 19 total bases was the most for a single game in team history. With hits in his last two at-bats in Friday's game, he tied another school record by getting hits in eight straight at-bats over that stretch.

The home runs came in consecutive at-bats in the late innings (innings 5-7) and he finished his day with a triple to center field before being lifted for a pinch-runner.

The former Piedmont Panther narrowly missed the record for slugging percentage in a game.

Lyerly has 27 extra-base hits out of his 47 total hits this season and leads the team with a .748 slugging percentage.

For the week, Lyerly added a fourth home run for the week in the Sunday game at UMass.

Charlotte will host five games this week, including No. 4 North Carolina Tuesday at 6 p.m. and USC Upstate on Wednesday before hosting Duquesne in an A-10 weekend series.
