Charlotte, N.C. - The White team took a two-games-to-one lead by defeating the Green team 7-3 in game three of the Niner World Series Tuesday night at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium. The game was shortened to seven innings due to pitch counts. The end-of-fall intersquad scrimmages continue with game four on Thursday at 3:15 p.m.
The Green team took the lead with a pair of runs in the first. Outfielder Cory Tilton reached for the first of three times on the evening with a single through the left side. After a sacrifice bunt by freshman Shane Basen and a walk to Kevin Gullespie, Tilton and Gillespie moved into scoring position due to a balk by White starter Wes Hatley. Catcher Miguel Rodriguez then drove both home with a two-RBI single to center to start the scoring for the night.
The White squad was able to tie the game in the third after outfielder Michael Green tripled to lead off the inning. Fellow outfielder Shane Brown drove him home and reached on a fielding error. After stealing second, Brown advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.
White then poured it on in the fourth with four runs on three walks and a pair of doubles. The first double drove in two runs off of the bat of freshman Jim Lyerly. The third run of the inning came on a wild pitch and the fourth came on an RBI double by infielder Justin Roland.
White added an insurance run in the sixth on a two-base throwing error to score catcher Zane Williams, who was walked to lead off the frame.
Green was able to scratch across a run in the seventh on two hits and an RBI fielder's choice by infielder Ryan Lazenby.
