Goldwire Nets Career-High 39 In Win at St. Bonaventure

Box Score

St. Bonaventure, N.Y. - Leemire Goldwire broke out of a two-game slump in a big way, scoring a career-high 39 points as Charlotte defeated St. Bonaventure, 87-83, in a hard-fought Atlantic 10 road game. With the win, head coach Bobby Lutz matched icon Jeff Mullins for the 49ers all-time record for wins by a head coach with 182.

Goldwire hit 8-of-13 threes and nailed 7-of-7 free throws, including 6-of-6 in the final 33 seconds to hold off the Bonnies.

"He's willing to take big shots and he's willing to take the responsibility," said 49ers head coach Bobby Lutz. "He stands up and he doesn't just hope it happens. He works at it and he makes it happen. He's special."

Goldwire's eight threes give him 303 in his career. It was his 4th 30-point game this season and the highest single-game scoring output in the A-10 this year.

Goldwire scored 28 points in the second half, hitting 6-of-9 three-pointers. He also added five steals.

"I was a little frustrated," said Goldwire of his last two games in which he did not score in double figures and hit just 2-of-22 three-pointers. "I did more (shooting in the gym). I did more mid-range shooting to get my confidence back. Then I worked on threes, then ballhandling, then free throws. I knew if I just kept working and I wanted to hold my follow-through."

An'Juan Wilderness added 14 points for the 49ers and Lamont Mack scored 11. Mike Gerrity passed out seven assists as the 49ers shot .491 from the field, .481 from long-range and a season-best .917 from the foul line.

The win improves Charlotte's record to 14-8 and 5-3 in A-10 play -- and it gives Lutz his 182nd career win as 49ers head coach.

"It will mean more later, I'm sure, because right now you're just worried about winning games. But it does mean alot. Jeff Mullins resurected this program and it is a nice feeling to share this record with him. Obviously, I have the utmost respect for coach Mullins."
