NEW YORK - Trailing by 2 with 1 second left, the 49ers went for a lob to high-flyer Charlie Coley. Lamont Mack's inbounds pass found Coley, but the junior was not able to get a grip on it. Leemire Goldwire received the tipped pass under the basket, but his quick shot did not fall, giving Fordham a 53-51 Atlantic 10 victory.
Charlotte (14-10; 5-5) shot just 34% for the game and never led, but mustered a comeback from six down, 48-42 with 4:33 to play, to give them a chance to steal the victory.
Mack led the 49ers with a career-high 20 points and seven rebounds while Goldwire finished with 12, hitting just 1-of-7 three-pointers.
Fordham (10-12; 4-6) shot 39%, but enjoyed an advantage from the free throw line, courtesy of bruising center Bryant Dunston, who hit 6-of-10 from the line on his way to a 14-point; 13-rebound double-double. While Charlotte scored more baskets, forced more turnovers, enjoyed a slight rebounding edge, and matched the Rams from long-range (5-of-17), Fordham hit 12-of-17 free throws compared to the 49ers 6-of-10 shooting. That six points was, for all intents and purposes, the difference.
Fordham led by as much as nine in the second half, but Charlotte battled back to within two, 44-42, with 6:17 to play.
Fordham's Marcus Stout seemed to ice the game with a pair of free throws with 22 seconds left to put Fordham ahead by four, but after Lamont Mack scored on a driving layup, the 49ers forced a tie up to regain possession with 10 seconds left to play. Goldwire missed a potential game-winning three but the rebound bounded out of bounds off Fordham, setting up Charlotte's final play.
