THE GAME: The Charlotte 49ers (13-6; 4-1) host Richmond (10-9; 3-3) in the school's annual Homecoming Game, Saturday at 3:00 p.m. (Radio: WFNA, 1660 AM - Matt Swierad; TV: TWC - Mike Solarte; Dave Telep; Live Audio: Charlotte49ers.com). Charlotte owns an impressive 10-1 home record, which includes a perfect 9-0 mark at Halton Arena, where Charlotte has won 10 straight. With a win, Bobby Lutz will tie Jeff Mullins as the 49ers all-time winningest coaches with 182 career victories.
THE ALUMNI GAME: As part of the Homecoming Activities, several former 49ers will take part in the annual Alumni Game at 12 noon. Among those scheduled to play are Kevin King, Jarvis Lang, Dan Plondke, Tremaine Gardiner, Bershaun Thompson, Keith Williams, Ray Gromlowicz, Donnie Koonce and Jermain Parker. Lew Massey will serve as head coach for one of the teams. Others in attendance for the weekend activity include all-time greats Cedric Maxwell and Byron Dinkins, who, along with Lang, have had their jerseys retired.
LUTZ 1 WIN SHY OF MULLINS: With 181 wins as the 49ers head coach, Bobby Lutz is within one victory of matching Jeff Mullins as the 49ers all-time winningest coach. Jeff Mullins, a former Duke all-America who won a gold medal on the 1964 US Olympic team before a stellar NBA career that included a World Championship with the 1976 Golden State Warriors, posted a 182-142 record in 11 years with the 49ers (1986-96).
RPI TALK (Through Jan. 31, rpiratings.com): Charlotte is one of 14 teams with seven wins vs. the Top 100 RPI (7-3) ... 7 of the 49ers 14 non-conference games were against Top 100 RPI teams (5-2) ... The A-10 and PAC-10 are the only conferences with three league teams with at least seven wins vs. the top 100 RPI (A-10, 3: Xavier; UMass; Charlotte); Pac 10: 2; ACC: 2) ... A-10 STATS: In A-10 play, Leemire Goldwire is averaging 22.8 points while shooting .429 (24-56) from long-range. Lamont Mack is averaging 15.4 points while shooting .483 (14-29) from long range and .453 from the field.
GOLDEN!: Senior Leemire Goldwire, who ranks 3rd in the A-10 in scoring, has scored in double figures in every game, with nine games of 20 or more points and three games with over 30. He's averaging 22.8 points in A-10 play. He notched his first career double-double (21 pts; 10 rebs.) as Charlotte won at #18/#19 Clemson and he scored a career-high 36 points vs. Saint Joseph's. He leads the A-10 and ranks sixth in the nation with 4.11 three-pointers per game. He owns the league's top three single-game scoring nights: 36 vs. St. Joe's; 34 vs. Davidson; 33 vs. Appalachian State. He has moved into 14th-place all-time with 1425 career points (75 shy of his 1500th career point). He needs 16 threes to pass all-time leading scorer Henry Williams for third-place in career threes made.
BENCH MARKS: Charlotte's bench averages 20.4 points per game and in 14 of the Niners' 19 games, at least eight different 49ers have hit the scoring column. A 49er has come off the bench to score in double-figures in 10 games (Ian Andersen, 5), including six of the last 10.
