THE TEAM: The Charlotte 49ers, who won their third straight Atlantic 10 Championship, are seeded second in the NCAA East Regional (Council Fire Golf Club; Chattanooga, Tenn) and are making their fourth straight NCAA appearance. Last year, the 49ers finished 3rd at the NCAA Championships. This year, Charlotte was ranked 10th in the preseason Golf World/GCAA Coaches' poll and spent time as the nation's consensus #1-ranked team after winning its first four stroke-play events, including the PING/Golfweek Preview (played at the site of the NCAA Championships) and the Scenic City Invitational (played at the site of the NCAA East Regionla). Charlotte is now ranked 5th by Golfstat, 9th by Golfweek and 6th by the Golf World coaches' poll.
The 49ers return four members from last year's NCAA third-place lineup, including three seniors: Andrew DiBitetto, Jonas Enander Hedin and Trevor Murphy. The 49ers senior class is the first in school history (any sport) to be a part of four straight NCAA Tournament teams.
ENANDER HEDIN National Player of the Year Candidate:
Senior Jonas Enander Hedin (Taby, Sweden) has accepted an invitation to participate in the 2008 Palmer Cup, The Ryder-Cup-style event pitting the top collegians from the US against their European counterparts. Enander Hedin will represent the European team. Enander Hedin is one of five finalists for the Byron Nelson Award (college senior) and was among the top 20 finalists for the Hogan and Nicklaus National Player of the Year Awards.
at Council Fire: The 49ers opened the 2007-08 season at the Scenic City Invitational, Sept. 10-11 at Council Fire Golf Club. The 49ers won the 17-team event, shooting 29-under par, six strokes better than runner-up UT-Chattanooga (-23). Oklahoma (-5) was the only other team to shoot under par. 49ers sophomore Corey Nagy was the medalist at 9-under par, 204, notching his first-ever collegiate win.
NCAA PROGRESS: Charlotte is making its fourth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament, becoming the first team in 49ers history to reach four straight NCAA Tournaments. Prior to the first appearance in 2005, Charlotte had never been to the NCAA Tournament as a team. (Paul Carpenter, who led the 49ers to the 1996 Conference USA Championship, qualified as an individual in 1996.)
