CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Seven Charlotte 49er student-athletes garnered Atlantic 10 weekly honors today. Women’s cross country junior Amanda Goetschius, men’s golf senior Corey Nagy, women’s soccer senior Hailey Beam and men’s soccer sophomore Evan James all picked up A-10 Player of the Week Honors. While, women’s cross country freshman Maria Ruiz, volleyball’s Bianca Rouse and men’s soccer Jennings Rex all took Rookie of the Week honors.

Goetschius, the 2008 A-10 Individual Champion, earned the A-10 honors for her runner-up finish at the Charlotte Invitational this past weekend at McAlpine Park, when she ran the 5K course in a personal best 17:09. Running in a field of over 200 competitors, Goetschius led Charlotte to a first place finish in the meet.

Ruiz picks up her second A-10 Rookie of the Week honor as she finished the 5k Charlotte Invitational course in 17:58, a personal best, while finishing in 12th place. Ruiz also garnered Rookie of the Week honors on Sept. 8th when she placed second in her collegiate debut, the USC Upstate Eye Opener.

Rouse was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week as she put up a career-high 16 kills against just one error in 32 attempts for a .469 attack percentage in Charlotte’s five-set win over Fordham Friday night and led the Niners in kills in both conference matches this weekend. She has led or tied for the team lead in kills in six Charlotte matches, which includes the last five overall and last four conference tilts. This is her first weekly award by the league and the third time a Charlotte volleyball player has been awarded the Rookie of the Week honor.

Nagy, the defending A-10 Champion, was named A-10 Golfer of the Week for recording his third career individual victory as he placed first at the VCU Shootout (Sept. 28-29) with a six-under 210. Nagy, a three-time all-American, fired an opening round 69 and shot a two-under 70 in the final round to seize the title by two strokes and lead Charlotte finished ninth in the 14-team field.

Beam was named Atlantic 10 Women’s Soccer Player of the Week for her performance in Charlotte’s victories over Rhode Island and Massachusetts last weekend. This marked the fourth time in Beam’s career that she has garnered A-10 Player of the Week honors. Charlotte has had a women’s soccer player named A-10 Player of the Week for three straight weeks and four times this season.

Beam scored the game-winning goal in each of Charlotte’s wins last weekend. She is second on the team with seven goals this season. She has scored 33 career goals and she needs only three goals to tie the program’s career mark for goals scored.

James was named Atlantic 10 Men’s Soccer Player of the Week after scoring a goal and assisting on the game-winning goal in the 49ers 3-1 victory at #3 Wake Forest last Tuesday. The 49ers victory at Wake Forest snapped the Demon Deacons’ nation’s best 46-match non-conference unbeaten streak. The 49ers men’s soccer program has earned A-10 Player of the Week honors three times this season. This marked the second time this season that James has earned A-10 Player of the Week honors. This week, James was also named to TopDrawerSoccer.com’s National Team of the Week for the second time this season.

The 49ers made a clean sweep of the A-10 Men’s Soccer Weekly honors after Rex was named A-10 Rookie of the Week for the second time this season. Rex scored the game-winning goal on his only shot in the 49ers 3-1 victory over #3 Wake Forest last Tuesday. Rex also made his first career start in the 49ers 1-0 win at Furman last Saturday.
