Charlotte, N.C. - Charlotte 49ers head golf coach Adam Pry has announced the signing of Joe Toland (White River Junction, Vt./Hartford H.S.) to play golf for the 49ers in 2010-11.

After placing third in his US Junior Amateur Qualifer at Walpole CC in Massachusetts, Toland advanced to the 64-player match play portion of the tournament. His rounds of 72-78 were good enough to earn him the 41st seed in match play, where he lost in the first round. He was also an alternate for the 2009 US Amateur after shooting rounds of 70-71, landing him fourth at his qualifier at Race Brook Country Club in Connecticut.

A strong student who carries a 3.44 GPA, Toland has proven he can compete at a very high level. He placed 6th out of 108 players at the World Series of Junior Golf and 6th out of 75 golfers at the Lessing's AJGA Junior Classic in Lawrence, NY where he put up solid rounds of 71-71-73. He added a second-place finish at the FCWT Red Tail Golf Open in Devens, Mass. He also shot a 68 to place first at his high school sectionals and carded a 66 to finish in first place at the Patriot Classic.

"I am thrilled that Joe has decided to be part of the 49ers golf program," said head coach Adam Pry. "Joe has had a very solid junior career and is one of the best players in the New England area. His sound technique and competitive spirit are great foundations to build upon and will serve him well at the collegiate level. Joe will surely be a big part of our future success."

The Charlotte 49ers have won four straight Atlantic 10 Championships and have advanced to the NCAA Tournament five straight times. The 49ers posted back-to-back NCAA top 10 finishes in 2007 (T3rd) and 2008 (T8th).
