Blacksburg, Va. - The Charlotte 49ers men's tennis team finished its opening matches of the spring, dropping a 4-3 decision to the University of Maryland-Baltimore County to end its stay at the Larsen Bowker Shootout, hosted by Virginia Tech. The Niners drop to 0-3 overall, with an 0-1 mark in conference play. The Retrievers are 2-1 following the weekend's play.

The Niners lost the doubles point and split the six singles matches to fall late in the match.

Brad Clinard (at number-three) and Moritz Bernhoerster (at number-five) both lost their first set in singles play, to rally and overtake their Retrievers opponents. Michael Anders won his number-four match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.

The doubles pair of Jesse Hutchinson and Jeff Archer lost its first match of the season, 8-6 at number-two doubles. Charlotte's lone doubles win came when Moritz Bernhoerster and Chris Huynh won at number-three 8-4.

"We had a chance to win at the end," said Niners head coach Jim Boykin. "We showed good improvement in each our matches this weekend. We fought a little bit with our experience and guys playing out of position, but they played hard all weekend."

Charlotte travels to take on No. 10 North Carolina indoors at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill. The match begins at 3:00 p.m., with the Tarheels then taking on James Madison at 7:30 as part of a doubleheader.
