Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers dropped the doubles point, then rallied to win five singles matches to overtake visiting Pfeiffer University 5-2 Sunday afternoon at the D.L. Phillips Tennis Complex. It was the second end of a doubleheader, with Charlotte defeating Johnson C. Smith University 7-0 that morning.
"We played great doubles yesterday at South Carolina," said Niners head coach Jim Boykin. "But today Pfeiffer came out and simply outplayed us early on. I think they ran into trouble in singles by having to cover more court, but they put a scare in us. You have to step up and play every time out. Pfeiffer did a good job today. We needed this heading into our week ahead when we'll be the underdogs in our matches.
Headlining the singles wins were freshmen Michael Anders and Chris Huynh did not lose a game or set en route to their singles sweeps at number-four or number-six, respectively. Anders improves to 5-2 in seven matches this semester, while Huynh achieved a winning record in singles play, at 4-3. A third freshman, Moritz Bernhoerster, improved to 5-3 in singles play in the dual match season, with a 6-1, 6-0 win at number-five in the afternoon.
Ricky Cuellar evened his season mark to 3-3, with a pair of singles wins today.
Sunday morning, the Niners swept Johnson C. Smith 7-0. The Golden Bulls lost 8-5 to Michael Anders and Jeff Archer at number-one doubles, and Charlotte kept JCSU at arm's length the rest of the way.
Tuesday, Charlotte travels to High Point for a 2 p.m. match.
