Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers earned a big home win, over previously ranked College of Charleston, in a 4-3 decision at the D.L. Phillips Tennis Complex Friday in men's college tennis. It was Charlotte's third win in a row and moves the season record to 4-5. The Cougars fall to 2-3 this season.

The result hung in the balance down to the final singles match of the afternoon, as freshman Michael Anders upended sophomore Joe Nicolazzi at number-four in a grueling second set, which he won 7-6 (7-5 in a tiebreaker).

Charlotte opened the match by winning two of three doubles matches to win the doubles point. The Niners proceeded to split the singles matches to earn the slim team victory.

"Both teams played very well," said Niners head coach Jim Boykin. "This was a great team victory for Charlotte. These guys fought hard for each other and for the team. Everyone was contesting their matches and playing good, hard tennis."

The Bernhoerster brothers, senior Felix and freshman Moritz, improved to 4-0 in doubles play this season, with an 8-5 win at number-two doubles, with Brad Clinard and Chris Huynh winning 8-6 at number-three over Omer Abramovich and Ross Moyer to clinch the doubles point.

Clinard and the younger Bernhoerster took singles points to add to the victory.

"To defeat one of the top teams in the Southern Conference and a team recognized by one of the top teams in the country is a great win for us. We need to keep up our energy for another tough challenge Saturday."

The Niners take on No. 51 Elon on the road Saturday at 1 p.m.
