Richmond, Va. - The Charlotte 49ers men's tennis team won its first conference match of the season, and third match in a row overall, 4-3 at Richmond Wednesday. All three consecutive wins have come by the slimmest of margins. Charlotte is 7-8 overall this season.
"We edged out another one," said Niners head coach Jim Boykin. "A win is a win, though. Our freshman have been playing well and our veteran players have been contributing as well. It's taking everyone's effort to help the team win."
The top doubles pair of Brad Clinard and Jesse Hutchinson won their third straight doubles match, 8-5, but the Niners could not convert in a pair of close matches to concede the doubles point.
Charlotte, however, took over in singles play to earn the match victory. Freshmen Michael Anders and Chris Huynh won at number-three and number-six, respectively, while juniors Brad Clinard and Ricky Cuellar contributed with wins at number-two and number-four singles. Anders' match was the clincher, needing to go to seven points in each of his two sets to decide the team victory.
Anders has won eight of his last eleven singles matches, and is 12-9 in singles play this season. He and Cuellar are both 2-0 in Atlantic 10 play this season.
Charlotte continues the A-10 roadtrip with a date at George Washington Thursday at noon.
