Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers dropped their final home match of 2009, a 4-3 men's tennis decision to College of Charleston, on Saturday morning at the Phillips Tennis Complex. The Niners call to 9-11 on the season, while the Cougars improve to 8-13.
"This team was as good as any as we will face in the conference," said Charlotte head coach Jim Boykin. "It was a good college tennis match."
The Niners took two of the three doubles matches to secure the first point of the match. Mortiz Bernhoerster and Jeff Archer won a tough, 9-8 match at number one over Delme and Koncilia.
At number two, Charlotte's Brad Clinard and Chris Huynh also captured a victory, 9-7, over Trintignac and Boyer.
The Niners managed two points in singles, but could not secure the third match for the team victory, despite either a three-set match or several matches including 7-6 sets.
Bernhoerster secured a point with a win by retirement in the number-one spot. He defeated Omer Abromovich in the third set with a 3-1 lead when he had to retire. He improved to 20-13 on the season, including a 10-10 mark in the spring season.
Freshman Anthony Davison was the other winner for Charlotte, defeating Trintignac 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3 in the tiebreak) for the other point. Davison has won nine of ten, and is 16-10 on the season.
"We lost the first set in every court in singles, starting sluggish," said Boykin.
Charlotte will await the seeding announcement for the upcoming Atlantic 10 Conference Championships, which begin play on Friday, April 24 in Monroeville, Pa. at the Club 4 Life.
