Monroeville, Pa. - The #5 seed Charlotte 49ers were eliminated from the championship draw of the A-10 Men's Tennis Championships with a 4-1 loss at the hands of #4 seed St. Bonaventure. Charlotte's top single, sophomore Moritz Bernhoerster, won the 49ers lone point with a straight set victory at the top spot.
The Bonnies picked up the doubles point to open the match with wins at #1 (8-6) and #3 (8-3) doubles. Charlotte was leading at #2 doubles (7-4) when the point was decided. In singles play, Bernhoerster quickly disposed of Chris Post, 6-3; 6-3 to even the match at 1-1 but the Bonnies would not drop another point.
Jon Luce defeated sophomore Michael Anders at #2, 6-4, 6-3 and Leo Mochizuki toppled freshman Anthony Davison, 7-6, 6-3 at #3 to inch SBU within one point. The 49ers freshman Charles Martin-Lecamp was winning at #4, (6-3; 3-6; 2-1) and senior Ricky Cuellar was coming back at #5 (6-7; 6-5) but Enric Larregola topped sophomore Chris Huynh, 6-3; 7-5 at #6 singles to clinch the match.
"It was a tough match," said 49ers head coach Jim Boykin, who started two freshmen and three sophomores in his afternoon singles' lineup. "I thought we battled hard. They just played better. They have some good seniors and we're a bit younger but they just played better. I told the guys we still have two tournament matches left so let's use that. It's important for us because next year, we'll be coming in as a team with experience."
Charlotte plays #8 seed Saint Joseph's in the consolation bracket, Saturday at 11:00 a.m. The Hawks lost their quarterfinal match to top seed George Washington, 4-0.
