St. Louis, MO - The Charlotte 49ers (14-9, A-10: 5-2) despite three players in double-figures led by Danielle Burgin's 15 points dropped a 71-60 road contest at Atlantic 10 foe Saint Louis Billikens (9-13, A-10: 4-3). The loss ended the 49ers ten-game winning streak against Saint Louis.
"We did not match Saint Louis' intensity in the first half," Charlotte coach Karen Aston said. "We did a better job matching their intensity in the second half. However, on the road you can't start a game we just dug ourselves to big a hole."
Burgin scored 15 points with 11 of those points coming in the second half. Wendy Stywalt recorded her second straight double-figure scoring game with 12 points while grabbing a team-high eight rebounds. Sabrina Gregory tallied her 57th double-figure scoring game of the season with 12 point.
The first half lead went back and forth for the first nine minutes with four ties and several lead changes. With the score tied, 15-15, at the 10:33 mark, Saint Louis would go on a 13-6 run over the next seven minutes taking a 28-21 lead at the 3:06 mark.
Saint Louis maintained their lead for the remainder of the half. Burgin connected a ten-foot jump shot as the first half clock expired cutting Saint Louis' halftime lead to 32-27.
Charlotte began the second half by scoring 10 of the half's first seventeen points cutting Saint Louis's lead to 39-37 on a Burgin layup at the 15:50 mark.
Saint Louis would then score seven unanswered points pushing their lead to 46-37 with 13:53 left in the game.
Then, Charlotte went on an 11-2 run over the next three minutes capped off by two Shannon McCallum free throws which tied the score for the fifth time, 48-48, with 10:33 left on the clock. Aysha Jones, Burgin and Gregory also scored during Charlotte's run.
