49ers Hold On For A 60-58 Win Over St. Bonaventre

The 49ers had three players in double-figures led by Wendy Stywalt's 12 points

Charlotte, NC - Behind a well-balanced offensive attack, the Charlotte 49ers (15-10, A-10: 6-3) jumped out to a 20-point second-half lead and then held on at the end for a 60-58 win over St. Bonaventure (15-9, A-10: 3-6) in Halton Arena. The victory was their sixth straight at home.

"I liked the way we started the game," Charlotte coach Karen Aston said. "I was disappointed in the way that we started the second half but then we regrouped taking control of the game. Then, we relaxed again and allowed St. Bonaventure to get back into the game at the end. I am pleased that we got another Atlantic 10 win. Everyone of our players that played tonight contributed to the victory."

Eight Charlotte players scored in the game led by Wendy Stywalt's 12 points. Traci Ray added 11 points to the 49ers attack and Danielle Burgin rounded out the 49ers double-figure scorers with 10 points. Shannon McCallum scored eight points and Whitney Hoey added seven points to the 49ers attack.

The 49ers finished the game with a 38-22 advantage on points in the paint. The 49ers enjoyed a 37-27 advantage on the boards while every Charlotte player grabbed at least one rebound led by six rebounds apiece by Erin Floyd and Burgin.

Charlotte began the game with an 8-0 run behind the scoring of Sabrina Gregory, Floyd, Ray and Stywalt. St. Bonaventure scored six of the next eight points on two three-pointers cutting Charlotte's lead to 10-6 at the 16:49 mark.

 

 

Then, the 49ers pushed their lead 18-9 over the next three minutes. Burgin would score four of Charlotte's eight points during their scoring run.

St. Bonaventure cut Charlotte's lead to six points behind a Tiara Johnson three at the 10:39 mark. Then, Charlotte behind baskets Tyhiesha Smith and McCallum pushed their lead to 12 points, 26-14, with 9:23 left in the first half.

St. Bonaventure cut the Charlotte lead to eight points but the 49ers continued their full-court defensive pressure pushing their lead to 14 points when Hoey knocked down a jump shot with 2:12 left in the first half.

St. Bonaventure's Dana Mitchell cut Charlotte's halftime lead to 32-20 with a basket with 21 seconds left on the first half clock.

St. Bonaventure scored the first seven points of the second half cutting Charlotte's lead to five points, 32-27, at the 17:40 mark.,

The 49ers would go on an 8-0 run over the next five minutes behind three-point baskets from Hoey and Ray pushing their lead to 13 points, 40-27, at the 12:48 mark.

With the 49ers leading, 42-32, at the 11:31 mark, Charlotte would score ten unanswered points pushing their lead to a game-high 20 points, 52-32, with 6:40 left in the game. McCallum scored six of her eight points during the 49ers' 10-0 run.

Then, St. Bonaventure's Mitchell scored stopping the 49ers run at the 5:50 mark. Stywalt answered Mitchell's basket pushing Charlotte's lead back to 20 points, 54-34, with 5:21 left in the game.

At that point, the 49ers stopped their full-court defensive pressure which enabled St. Bonaventure to close the game on a 24-6 run capped off by Mitchell's three-point basket with one second left in the game. The 49ers only points in the final five minutes came on Ray's four free throws and a layup from Stywalt with nine seconds left in the game.

The 49ers return to action when they battle A-10 foe Saint Joseph's in Halton Arena, Tuesday, February 12 at 7 pm.
