49ers Cruise Past Fordham, 79-55

Sabrina Gregory led three 49ers in double-figures with 17 points

Feb. 27, 2008

Bronx, NY - The Charlotte 49ers (17-12, A-10: 8-5) behind three double-figure scorers led by Sabrina Gregory's 17 points cruised past Fordham (0-28, A-10: 0-13), 79-55, in their final regular season road game. The victory helped the 49ers win their fifth final regular season road game in the last six years.

"I thought we played with a great deal of energy tonight," Charlotte coach Karen Aston said. "We did a good job defensively and we did a nice job on the boards tonight. I really appreciate the tone that Sabrina Gregory set for us tonight. I thought that our starting lineup set the tone for us early in tonight's game. It was just a good total team win."

Gregory scored her 17 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field. Gregory, who leads the A-10 in free throw shooting, went a perfect three-for-three from the line. Gregory's 17 points was her 60th double-figure scoring game of her career. Gregory also tied Pam Brown for the most career games played in school history at 122 games. Wendy Stywalt tallied her tenth double-figure scoring game of the season with 13 points. She also grabbed eight rebounds. Danielle Burgin recorded her eighth double-double of the season and the 11th of her career with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Jab

The 49ers dominated the game in the paint with a 32-10 advantage on points in the paint. The 49ers bench led by Burgin's 10 points and Jabrenta Hubbard's career-high nine points outscored Fordham's bench, 34-19.

Charlotte enjoyed a 50-31 advantage on the boards which led to a 19-9 advantage on second chance points.

Charlotte scored the game's first ten points behind two baskets from Gregory and baskets by Erin Floyd, Whitney Hoey and Shannon McCallum.

Fordham did not get on the board until Kristina Bell connected on a jump shot at the 13:31 mark of the first half.

After that basket, Fordham would score seven of the next thirteen points cutting Charlotte's lead to 16-9 at the 10:54 mark. But that would be as close as Fordham would get to the 49ers the rest of the game.

With the 49ers leading 20-11 with 9:42 on the clock, Charlotte would outscore Fordham, 18-7, over the remainder of the half. Charlotte's Tyhiesha Smith made the halftime score, 38-18, with a layup with one second left on the first half clock.

Fordham began the second half with a three-point basket from Megan Mahoney cutting Charlotte's lead to 17 points. The 49ers answered with a layup from Smith pushing Charlotte's lead to 19 points, 40-21, with 18:46 on the clock.

Charlotte pushed their lead to a game-high 27 points, 58-31, when McCallum connected on a layup with 10:22 left in the game.

The rest of the game the 49ers maintained a lead of at least 22 points. Charlotte's Hubbard scored the 49ers final basket with a jumpshot with 11 seconds left in the game. Fordham's Kyara Weekes connected on a free throw with one second left making Charlotte's final margin of victory, 79-55.

The 49ers conclude their regular-season when they battle A-10 foe Richmond in Halton Arena, Saturday, March 1 at 7 pm. Prior to the Richmond game, the 49ers will honor seniors Gregory and Whitney Hoey who will be playing in their final regular season home game.
