Greenville, NC - Jennifer Hailey led three 49ers in double-figures with 17 points but the Charlotte 49ers fell on the road to East Carolina, 84-61, in the season-opening game for both teams.
"Some things came to the forefront that I feared," Charlotte coach Karen Aston said. "We have a lot of young players who played in their first collegiate game. The chemistry of our team was not quite there. You have to give East Carolina a lot of credit. They outhustled us tonight. It is only the first game but we have a ways to go."
Hailey in her collegiate game when 6-for-6 from the field. She nearly recorded a double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds. Erin Floyd added 12 points and eight rebounds to the 49ers attack. While, Aysha Jones rounded out the 49ers double-figure scorers with 12 points. Shannon McCallum added nine points to the 49ers attack.
East Carolina's Allison Spivey led all scorers with 25 points.
The 49ers bench behind Hailey's 17 points tallied 22 points in the game.
In the first half, Floyd scored the 49ers first basket of the 2009-10 season with a three-point field goal from the top of the key at the 19:38 mark.
After Floyd's basket ECU preceded to go on a 16-6 run over the next seven minutes taking a 16-9 lead with 12:43 left in the first half.
Charlotte cut the ECU lead to 16-14 behind five straight points from Jennifer Hailey.
With ECU leading 18-16 at the 11:16 mark, the Pirates went on an 8-0 run pushing their lead to 26-16 with 8:47 left in the first half.
ECU would maintain a lead of 8-12 points for the remainder of the half taking a 37-27 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Charlotte behind two free throws from Kendria Holmes and a three-pointer by Jones cut East Carolina's lead to eight points, 47-39 at the 14:28 mark. However, that would be as close as the 49ers would get as ECU went on a 12-0 run over the next three minutes pushing their lead to 59-39 with 11:29 left on the clock.
