49ers Host Rhode Island In Halton Arena, Sunday

The 49ers have won 79 of their last 93 home games entering the Rhode Island game

The Charlotte 49ers women's basketball team (16-11, A-10:7-4) hosts Atlantic 10 foe Rhode Island (11-15, A-10:4-7) in Halton Arena, Sunday, February 24 at 2 pm. The 49ers are unbeaten in 2008 at home after seven straight home wins.

The 49ers enter the Rhode Island game tied with Dayton for fourth place in the Atlantic 10 with three games left in the regular season. Charlotte holds the tiebreaker over Dayton by virtue of their 64-51 win at Dayton in January. The top four seeds in the Atlantic 10 Tournament which begins March 7 get a first-round bye. Charlotte has earned a first-round bye in the A-10 Tournament in each of the last two seasons.

Charlotte has posted a 79-14 record in Halton Arena over the past seven years. During that stretch, the 49ers have made five straight postseason tournament appearances and have posted first-round WNIT victories at home in each of the last two years. The 49ers are 11-2 this season in Halton Arena with Atlantic 10 victories over Massachusetts, Saint Louis, La Salle, Saint Bonaventure and Saint Joseph's at home this season.

Junior center Danielle Burgin, who leads the 49ers in scoring (11.1 ppg) and rebounding (8.5 rpg), recorded her tenth career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds at Xavier last Sunday. Senior guard Sabrina Gregory, who is second on the team in scoring (10.5 ppg), scored a team game-high 19 points at Xavier. Freshman guard Shannon McCallum enters the Rhode Island game after collecting back-to-back double-figure scoring games off the bench with 12 points against Saint Joseph's and 13 points at Xavier.

This game will mark the third meeting between Charlotte and Rhode Island. Each team has won a game in the series on their home court. Charlotte lost at Rhode Island, 91-78, in their last meeting, January 26, 2007. Sabrina Gregory scored 16 points and Danielle Burgin tallied 14 points for the 49ers in their game at Rhode Island last season. Charlotte defeated Rhode Island, 74-67, in their only ever meeting in Halton Arena, February 24, 2006. Former 49ers standouts Sakellie Daniels and Pam Brown scored 18 points and 17 points respectively in that game. Senior guard Whitney Hoey rounded out the 49ers double-figure scorers with 11 points.

Admission to the Rhode Island game is $5 for adults. While all youth (17-and-under) as well as Charlotte 49ers student with a valid ID are admitted free.
