Charlotte, NC - Charlotte 49ers women's basketball coach Karen Aston has announced that former Charlotte prep standout point guard Kendria Holmes (Charlotte, NC/Victory Christian) will transfer into the 49ers program from Providence College. Holmes, who earned Big East Conference All-Freshman team honors in 2007, led the Friars in scoring as a sophomore last year averaging 11.3 points while dishing out 117 assists.
"I am extremely excited to add Kendria to our recruiting class," Aston said. "First of all, to add a Charlotte native, is tremendous for our program. In addition to that, we are adding depth at the point guard position with the eventual graduation of (rising senior) Traci Ray. Kendria has played at the highest level in the Big East, and been successful. She will immediately make an impact on our program. She is a playmaker! I repeat, the most exciting thing to me aside from her ability on the court is the fact that she decided to come home to Charlotte."
Holmes joins a 2008-09 recruiting class that includes 6-0 guard/forward Rachelle Coward of Nova Scotia, Canada, 6-3 forward Jennifer Hailey of Marshville, North Carolina, 6-2 forward Nicole Hargraves of Greensboro, North Carolina, 5-11 guard/forward Paige McCallum of Whiteville, North Carolina and 5-10 guard Katie Meador of Marble Falls, Texas. As an NCAA transfer, Holmes will sit out the 2008-09 season and have two years of eligibility remaining.
Holmes, a 5-foot-5 point guard, is no stranger to the 49ers program. She is the cousin of the 49ers fourth all-time leading scorer and first-team All-Conference USA performer Tonya Phifer (1997-01).
"It is a great opportunity to come back to my home town and be able to play in front of my family and friends," Holmes said. "I am excited to play for a great program that has a great tradition. My cousin Tonya played for the 49ers. It will be a great opportunity to come behind her and try to do even bigger things at Charlotte."

As a freshman at Providence in 2006-07, she was named to the Big East All-Freshman team after averaging 7.3 points and dishing out a team-leading 103 assists. She scored in double-figures 12 times including eight times against Big East foes. She scored a season-high 18 points against West Virginia, January 13, 2007. She was one of five players in the Big East that season to record a double-digit assists in a game with 10 assists against Saint Francis (NY), November 21, 2006. In the St. Francis game, she also scored 10 points for her first collegiate double-double.
At Victory Christian, Holmes was named the SPAA Conference Player of the Year and earned NCISAA All-State honors as a senior. She was also named to the Charlotte Observer All-Observer team as well as the Charlotte Weekly Super Team as a senior in 2006. She was named National Association of Christian Athletes (NACA) Player of the Year, NACA Outstanding Defensive Player and NACA All-America. As team captain, she played an integral role in leading Victory Christian to two national, state and conference championships. She played her final three prep seasons at Victory Christian after spending her freshman season at Vance High School.
Coward, Hailey, Hargraves, Holmes, McCallum and Meador join a Charlotte 49ers women's basketball program that returns nine players from a 2007-08 squad that made the program's school-record sixth straight postseason tournament appearance.
