Charlotte, NC - Rachelle Coward, a sophomore guard from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada, was one of three freshman on the 49ers 2009 Atlantic 10 Championship team. She saw action in 18 games as a freshman last season. Coward recently sat down with the Charlotte 49ers athletic media relations office to talk about her summer.
Coward tallied her first career double-figure scoring game with 10 points in a season-high 18 minutes in the 49ers victory over Charleston Southern. She scored her first career points on her first career shot which was her first career three-point field goal in a 49ers road win at Hampton. She enjoyed one of her best games of the season with six points and three rebounds in Charlotte's road win at Rhode Island.
In the summer prior to her freshman year at Charlotte, she was invited to tryout for the Canadian Junior National team. She was named one of the Top 100 players in the United States by Slam Magazine. As a senior at Oak Hill Academy, she was named team Offensive MVP after scoring 441 points (14.5 ppg). She earned All-Tournament honors after helping Oak Hill finish as the National Runner-up at the NACA Tournament. In 2008, she played an integral role in helping the U-17 Nova Scotia team finish third in the Canadian National Tournament.
What are you doing this summer? I am staying in the gym and working on my game and playing pickup as well as running and lifting weights.
Did you go home to Canada this summer? I went for a couple of weeks at the end of the spring semester. I got to see my family and especially my baby brother for the first time in a while.
What is the weather like in Nova Scotia during the summer? The weather is very nice. When it is hot in Nova Scotia there is still a cool breeze unlike it is in Charlotte.
What classes are you taking this summer? Biology and a Biology lab.
What are planning on to majoring in? Psychology and I hope to eventually go to medical school.

What do you need to do to get more playing time next year? Get in better shape and work on my ball handling.
Were there any surprises in your first year of college? Everything was a surprise since I did not know what to expect being from Canada as well as being in my first year of college.
What are your thoughts on the coaching staff? I love the coaching staff. I am extremely gratefull that they have given me the opportunity to play college basketball at Charlotte.
