Box Score

Chapel Hill, NC - Junior Hailey Beam scored the Charlotte 49ers women's soccer team's first goal of the season but it was not enough as the 49ers dropped a hard fought 5-1 decision at #2 North Carolina.

For the third straight year, Beam scored a goal in the 49ers first game of the season.

"We had moments in tonight's game that we played better than we have ever had during my time at Charlotte," Charlotte coach Jon Lipsitz said. "We had moments of brilliance. We defended well and counter attacked well. However, we gave up three set piece goals which is something that we never do at Charlotte. North Carolina is a fantastic team. Our team battled and we had our moments in the game."

North Carolina scored the game's first goal when Allie Long scored off assists from Nikki Washington and Meghan Klingenburg in the tenth minute.

Charlotte answered when Beam scored off a penalty kick in the 35th minute. The penalty kick was the result of freshman Macky Wingo being taken down in the box by a North Carolina defender as she had broken free of the Tarheels defense. Beam's goal allowed the 49ers to go to halftime tied at one with North Carolina.

North Carolina regained the lead for good when Courtney Jones scored off a Washington assist in the 49th minute.

Long scored her second goal of the game when Klingenburg's corner kick found Ali Hawkins who passed to Long. Long then scored North Carolina's third goal in the 53rd minute.

The 49ers had a two great scoring chances when the score was 3-1, but both shots on goal hit the post and nearly went in which would have cut North Carolina's lead in half.

North Carolina's Yael Averbuch made the score, 4-1, when she scored from 26 yards out off a Long assist in the 66th minute.

North Carolina's Katie Klimczak scored the game's final goal off a Mandy Moraca corner kick in the 89th minute.

Charlotte finished the game with nine shots. Danielle Mayeaux and Beam each recorded two shots to lead the 49ers.

The 49ers return to action when they host UNC Wilmington in their home-opener at Transamerica Field, Monday, August 25 at 6 pm. The first 250 fans will receive a free Charlotte 49ers women's soccer schedule t-shirt.
