Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte 49ers (1-1-0) women's soccer team behind two unanswered late second half goals by freshman Jonna Handra rallied to defeat UNC Wilmington, 3-2, in their home opener at Transamerica Field. The victory gave the 49ers a win in their home opener for the third straight season.
"We played poorly tonight," Charlotte coach Jon Lipsitz said. "You have to give a great deal of credit to UNC Wilmington for the way we played. We did not train well this weekend and it showed. We learned a lesson tonight. However, I am very happy that we learned that lesson in a win."
UNC Wilmington scored the game's first goal when Meagan Simeone headed in a Brittany Croce cross in the seventh minute.
The 49ers tied the score when Hailey Beam scored her team-leading second goal of the season off a Whitney Weinraub pass in the 13th minute.
UNC Wilmington regained the lead when Eric Rodgers took a Kelly Renkin pass and put a shot into the top right corner of the goal past a diving Lauren Brown in the 22nd minute.
The 49ers put UNC Wilmington under tremendous pressure for a majority of the second half. Charlotte finally tied the score when Handra put the ball in the back of the net off a deflected Macky Wingo shot in the 76th minute. Handra's goal was the first of her career.
Charlotte took the lead for good when Handra headed the ball into the back of the net in a scrum in front of the UNC Wilmington goal in the 84th minute. Sam Huecker and Oni Bernard assisted on the goal. Handra's goal was her second of the game and her first career game-winning goal.
