Pittsburgh, PA - The Charlotte 49ers (3-1-1) behind stellar defense and another goal from Whitney Weinraub shutout Big East foe Pittsburgh (2-3-), 1-0, to push their unbeaten streak to four games. With the shutout, the 49ers defense has only allowed one goal in their last 358 minutes of action.
"We played a very good game against a well-coached and well-organized Pittsburgh team," Charlotte coach Jon Lipsitz said. "We knew that this would be a difficult game. But we kept working and took advantage of a special game-winning moment. The story of the game was how our team defended today. We held a good Pittsburgh team to no goals and only three shots. Our work rate by our goalkeeper and our back four was tremendous particularly after playing a tough 110 minute game at Ohio State on Friday night."
Weinraub scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season and the 11th goal of her career when she put the ball into the lower right corner of the net off assists from Whitney Bryant and Nikki Dumencich in the 22nd minute of the match. Weinraub has scored a goal in three straights games and all five of her goals have coming during that three-game stretch.
Charlotte enjoyed a 10-3 advantage in shots. Sam Huecker and Jonna Handra paced the 49ers with two shots apiece.
However, the 49ers defense was the story of the game. Goalkeeper Lauren Brown recorded her first solo shutout of the season and her 13th career shutout. Charlotte's defense limited Pittsburgh to only one shot in the second half.
