Winston-Salem, NC - The Charlotte 49ers women's soccer team dropped a road contest at ACC foe #16 Wake Forest, 3-0, in their first game at the Wake Forest Nike Tournament. Charlotte concludes play in the Wake Forest Nike Tournament against Virginia Tech, Sunday, September 14 at 11 am.
"Wake Forest moved the ball as well as any team we have ever played," Charlotte coach Jon Lipsitz said. "They are a very well-coached and well organized team that is better than their #16 national ranking indicates. This game will help prepare us for conference play. I felt that after the first 15 minutes that we played pretty good game. Anyone that saw tonight's game would say that the score does not indicate the way the game was played. However, we need every position to show up ready to play for us to be successful."
Wake Forest scored their first goal when Bianca D'Agostino scored off assists from Amanda Lebo and Allie Sadow in the 10th minute.
The Demon Deacons made the score, 2-0, when Amy Smerdzinski took a free kick from 19 yards out. Smerdzinski's shot deflected off Charlotte goalkeeper Lauren Brown and Lebo corralled the deflection and put the ball in the back of the net in the 49th minute.
Wake Forest concluded their scoring when Caitlin Farrell scored off a D'Agostino assist in the 52nd minute.
Charlotte finished the game with an 11-10 advantage in shots. Macky Wingo paced the 49ers with three shots. While Danielle Mayeaux and Sam Huecker tallied two shots apiece.
