49ers Fall to Virginia Tech 5-1

Bernard tallies her first goal of the season as Niners fall 5-1 to the Hokies.

Sept. 14, 2008

Box Score

Winston Salem, N.C. - Oni Bernard drew first blood in the 40th minute to give the 49ers the lead, but five unanswered goals by the Hokies proved to be the difference as the Charlotte 49ers wrapped up the weekend at the Wake Forest tournament with a 5-1 loss to Virginia Tech. Junior Hailey Beam and sophomore Danielle Mayeaux earned All-Tournament honors.

Bernard's first tally of the season gave the Niners a 1-0 lead to take to the intermission, but five Virginia Tech (5-2) goals in the second half led to the 49ers (3-3-1) heading back to the Queen City in defeat.

Charlotte amassed 14 shots on the day and four corners but were unable to capitalize on the scoring opportunities as Hokie goaltender Kristen Carden was brilliant in goal with six saves.

Freshman Macky Wingo had a stellar day as well as she recorded three shots on goal for the Niners.

Charlotte will look to rebound on Sunday, September 21 when they travel to Florence, S.C. to do battle with Francis Marion.
