Two-Time A-10 Champs Kickoff The 2008 Season At #2 North Carolina

The 49ers have won two straight season openers and are 8-4-2 all-time in season-openers

Aug. 21, 2008

Charlotte, NC - The two-time defending Atlantic 10 Champion Charlotte 49ers women's soccer team, who were picked to win their third straight A-10 title in the preseason A-10 coaches poll, travels to #2 North Carolina for their season-opener, Friday, August 22 at 7 pm. The 49ers enter the game with an 8-4-2 all-time record in season openers including posting victories in their last two season openers.

The 49ers, who tied a school-record with 16 wins in 2007, return eight starters and nineteen letterwinners of a 2007 team which tied the school-record with 16 wins en route to the A-10 regular season and tournament titles as well as a bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The 49ers are led by preseason All-Atlantic selections junior goalkeeper Lauren Brown and sophomores midfielder Sam Huecker and defender Whitney Bryant. Two-time All-Atlantic 10 selection fifth-year senior Nikki Labuda Czaplicki returns to the 49ers lineup after missing most of the last season due to injury. Senior forward Nikki Dumencich, the 2005 A-10 Rookie of the Year, junior midfielder Hailey Beam, the 2007 A-10 Tournament MVP, and Lauren Brown were voted team tri-captains. Sophomore forward Whitney Weinraub returns to the 49ers attack after tying Huecker for the team lead in goals with six last season.

This game will be the third meeting between Charlotte and North Carolina. The Tarheels have won the previous two contests including a meeting in the second round of the 1998 NCAA Tournament.

After the North Carolina, the 49ers return home to face UNC Wilmington in their home opener at Transamerica Field, Monday, August 25 at 6 pm.
