Charlotte 49ers Soccer to Participate in Youth Soccer Month and Passback Program

Sept. 8, 2008

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers men's and women's soccer teams will honor Youth Soccer Month as part of two home contests during the month of September. The featured matches will be on Saturday, September 19 as the men play host to Winthrop at 7:30 p.m. in the second game of the Nike Invitational, and on Friday, September 26 when the women open up their Atlantic 10 Conference schedule against La Salle at 7 p.m. All youth 17 and under will be admitted free to both matches in recognition of Youth Soccer Month.

Prior to the women's game on Sept. 26, the 49ers men's and women's soccer teams will host a free 49er Youth Soccer Clinic on the auxiliary fields at 5:30 p.m. After the clinic kids can head over to the end zone at Transamerica Field to get the autographs of men's players or be entertained with exciting inflatable activities. For more information or to sign up for the youth clinic, please contact Colm deBurca at 704.687.6572 or cdeburaca@uncc.edu.

In addition to celebrating Youth Soccer Month in September, the 49ers men's and women's soccer team will also take part in the Passback Program, a program designed to distribute soccer equipment to individuals that may otherwise not be able to afford equipment to play the sport of soccer. Throughout the month of September at each home men's and women's soccer match (Sept. 19, Sept. 21, Sept. 24, Sept. 26, Sept. 27, and Sept. 30), the Charlotte 49ers will be collecting new and gently used soccer equipment to be donated to a local organization in need. Anyone who brings any soccer related equipment to donate at the game will gain free admission to the match.

  • Bring kids and families of all ages and all abilities together for fun, friendship and fitness.
  • Highlight the various programs available to children interested in participating in soccer, including inner-city, special needs, recreational and elite soccer programs.

    About the Passback Program
The Passback Program is a joint effort between the U.S. Soccer Foundation, Eurosport and Major League Soccer to help meet the soccer uniform and equipment needs of all communities, regardless of income, gender or location. In 2007 the Passback Program collected and distributed 131, 951 pieces of equipment and affected 44,000 children's lives.

It is the goal of the Passback Program to collect and distribute one million pieces of equipment around the world. It can be done by remembering the Passback slogan, "Share the Equipment. Share the Game!"
