Beam and Handra Earn A-10 Weekly Honors

Beam was named A-10 Player of the Week; Jonna Handra earned A-10 Co-Rookie of the Week honors for the second time this season

Sept. 29, 2008

Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte 49ers women's soccer team swept the Atlantic 10 Weekly honors for the second time this season and the fourth time in the program's history this week. Junior midfielder Hailey Beam earned Atlantic 10 Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career. Freshman forward Jonna Handra was named A-10 Co-Rookie of the Week for the second time this season.

This is the fourth time in the program's history that the 49ers have swept the A-10 Weekly honors. Earlier this season, sophomore forward Whitney Weinraub was named A-10 Player of the Week and Handra earned A-10 Rookie of the Week honors. Last season, sophomore midfielder Sam Huecker was named A-10 Player and Rookie of the Week, October 15. Then, Rachel Mees was named A-10 Player of the Week while senior goalkeeper Juli Black earned A-10 Rookie of the Week honors, October 17, 2005.

Beam, who earned A-10 Rookie of the Week honors in 2006, earned her first-ever A-10 Player of the Week award after scoring four goals with four assists helping the 49ers began A-10 play with two victories. She scored a goal and added two assists as the 49ers began defense of their back-to-back A-10 titles with a 6-0 win over La Salle in their A-10 opener, Friday. Then, she collected the team's second hat trick of the season and the tenth in the program's history in the 49ers 8-2 road win at St. Bonaventure, Sunday. She added two assists to go along with her three goals in the St. Bonaventure game. She is the sixth different 49ers women's soccer player to earn A-10 Player of the Week honors.

Beam is currently tied with Weinraub for the A-10 lead in goals with eight. Beam is second behind Weinraub for the A-10 lead in points with 22. She is also second behind Weinraub for the A-10 lead in assists with six.

Handra, who was a preseason Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team selection, earns Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors for the second time this season. She recorded her second multiple goal game of the season with two goals in the 49ers road win at St. Bonaventure. She also assisted on the 49ers final goal against St. Bonaventure. She earned her first A-10 Rookie of the Week award after scoring her first two career goals including the game-winning goal in the 49ers 3-2 victory over UNC Wilmington, Monday, August 25.

Handra's A-10 Rookie of the Week award gives the 49ers three A-10 Rookie of the Week awards this season including two straight since Oni Bernard earned A-10 Rookie of the Week honors last week.

Handra is tied with Bernard and Huecker for second on the team with four goals.

Beam, Handra and the rest of the 49ers women's soccer team returns to action when they host A-10 foe Saint Louis at Transamerica Field, Saturday, October 4 at 7 pm.
