Smith and McCall Lead Team with Two RBI Apiece

March 2, 2008

Columbus, Ga. - The Charlotte 49ers (8-9) fell 6-1 to Hofstra Sunday afternoon in the final game of the NFCA Lead Off Classic, tallying one run on five hits. Junior second baseman Sarah Malene collected the lone RBI of the contest when she reached on a fielder's choice with bases loaded in the fifth inning. Sophomore outfielder Serena Smith and freshman Kendra McCall led the team with two hits apiece, while senior outfielder Emily Forbes collected one on the day.

Hofstra jumped to an early lead, scoring one run in each of the second and third innings, before laying it on heavy in the top of the fifth, scoring three runs on three hits, including a two-run homer. The 49ers attempted to answer late in the inning with Malene's RBI, but failed to capitalize, allowing Hofstra to score one more security run in the top of the seventh to take the game.

The 49ers pitching staff--starter sophomore Emily Jeffery, sophomore reliever Gina Allen and freshman closer Katy Hackett--struck out four while walking just one batter. They were joined defensively by sophomore first baseman Keri Palma with nine putouts, freshman catcher Tenaya Tucker with four and Malene with three to match her three assists.
