Columbus, Ga. - Sophomore pitcher Emily Jeffery, with relief help from freshman Katy Hackett, tallied her fourth win of the year, giving up just two runs on six hits to upset Georgia Tech 6-2 Saturday at the NFCA Lead Off Classic. Junior catcher Jaime West and junior shortstop Cee Brooks anchored the 49ers offensively with two RBI apiece.
Charlotte took control of the game early, netting three runs on three hits in the first inning. A single from sophomore outfielder Serena Smith opened scoring, sending junior second baseman Sarah Malene home, before a single from Brooks and a walk for freshman catcher Tenaya Tucker scored junior Jenny Rumbles and Smith. The 49ers laid it on once more in the second, when a West single to center field score both Smith and Malene and a Brooks double sent freshman pinch runner Whitney Williams home. Georgia Tech was unable to answer the scoring barrage, taking in just one run each in the third and sixth innings.
Earlier in the day, Auburn shutout Charlotte 4-0, allowing just four hits--two apiece from Smith and Tucker--while walking five batters.
