Charlotte Drops Doubleheader 7-0, 9-1 to Winthrop

Rumbles Attempts Early Rally with Single to Center Field

Box Score

Rock Hill, S.C. - The Charlotte 49ers (8-11) stumbled in doubleheader action at Winthrop (10-10) Wednesday afternoon, falling 7-0 and 9-1 in games one and two, respectively. Junior centerfielder Serena Smith led the team with three hits, all in the second contest, while junior third baseman Jenny Rumbles drove home the lone RBI of the day.

In the first game, Winthrop scored the game-winning runs in the first inning with a two-RBI single through the left side before laying it on heavy in the fourth with five runs on six hits. The 49ers, hungry for a comeback, collected their first hit of the game in the top of the sixth with a single to left field by freshman catcher Tenaya Tucker, but were unable to overcome the deficit. Senior outfielder Emily Forbes, who singled up the middle, tallied the second hit of the afternoon for Charlotte in the seventh.

Winthrop pitcher Megan Evans took the win with a one-hitter and seven strikeouts as teammate Izzy Trottier recorded the one-hit save.

In the second game, the 49ers answered a two-run Winthrop lead in the top of the second, when Rumbles singled to centerfield, scoring junior catcher Jaime West, who reached base off a single of her own. Despite the four-hit inning, Charlotte was unable to dig itself out of the hole, as Winthrop posted a three-run fourth inning and four-run sixth inning to take the game.

Freshman pitcher Katy Hackett, joined defensively by five putout performances from West and first baseman Alyssa Kemmerer, struck out four batters and walked two in just over five innings pitched.

Charlotte returns to action this weekend when it hosts the 49er Invitational, taking on North Florida (12:30 p.m.) and Miami of Ohio (3:00 p.m.) on the first day of play.
