Box Score

Rock Hill, S.C. - Behind a two RBI performance from freshman outfielder and All Tournament team selection Whitney Williams, the Charlotte 49ers (14-15) split the closing day of the Winthrop adidas Tournament Sunday afternoon, falling 1-0 to Furman before rallying past Gardner-Webb 3-2. Freshman pitcher Katy Hackett (6-7) anchored the 49ers defensively in the late game, giving up six hits in six innings pitched while striking out eight.

Furman took the first game on a Mackey bomb to center field in the bottom of the sixth after holding Charlotte to just five hits. Sophomore outfielder Serena Smith, sophomore utility Keri Palma, senior outfielder Emily Forbes, junior first baseman Alyssa Kemmerer and Williams each contributed one hit apiece for the 49ers.

The 49ers came close to scoring in the top of the second when Palma and Forbes both singled to right field with one out, but they were left on following two ground outs. Later in the game, Charlotte attempted to even the slate in the top of the seventh as Palma gave up a sacrifice bunt and Forbes grounded out to second, advancing junior pinch runner Jenny Rumbles to third base, but a Kemmerer line out to the Paladin pitcher arrest any further offense.

49er pitcher Emily Jeffery gave up six hits in six innings, collecting five strikeouts in the process.

In the second game, Charlotte rallied from a two-run deficit to overcome Gardner-Webb in the top of the sixth, as Williams singled to third base, allowing Forbes and Rumbles to score on an infield error. The 49ers had cut the Bulldog lead to one in the fourth when Palma homered to left field, tallying her second home run of the season.

Forbes led Charlotte with three hits in the contest, including two singles and a double, while junior second baseman Sarah Malene, freshman outfielder Kendra McCall, junior catcher Jaime West, Smith and Kemmerer each contributed one.

The 49ers return to action Tuesday when they take on Charleston Southern and Towson State in Charleston, S.C.
