Charleston, S.C. - Behind an RBI triple to left field from sophomore utility Keri Palma and an RBI single through the right side from senior outfielder Emily Forbes, the Charlotte 49ers (15-16) secured a 5-3 win over Towson at Buccaneer Field Wednesday afternoon before falling 2-0 to Charleston Southern. Forbes led the 49ers with two RBI on the day.
In the early game, Charlotte built a three-run lead in the first three innings while holding Towson to just one hit behind the pitching of freshman Katy Hackett. Hackett, who threw seven complete innings, gave up just five hits while striking out nine.
Charlotte got on the board in the top of the second as Forbes tripled to right center, scoring junior pinch runner Jenny Rumbles, before a sacrifice fly to center field by freshman catcher Tenaya Tucker tallied the second run of the inning. The 49ers followed up in the third as sophomore outfielder Serena Smith pushed the lead to three. Towson evened the slate in the bottom of the fifth, though, scoring three runs on three hits, including a single and 2 RBI triple. Behind the efforts of Forbes and Palma in the top of the seventh and two Hackett strikeouts, the 49ers pulled away to take the win.
Charlotte tallied 13 hits in the contest, anchored by a three-hit performance from junior shortstop Cee Brooks.
In the next game, the 49ers faced Charlotte transfer Jamie Wellons on the mound as the Charleston Southern scored the game-winning run early in the first. Charlotte was held to three hits, led by a two-hit performance from junior second baseman Sarah Malene.

Despite the relief efforts of Hackett and sophomore Emily Jeffery, Charlotte failed the climb out of the two-run hole, leaving six on base for the remainder of the game.
The 49ers return to action Saturday when they kick off the Atlantic 10 conference season with a doubleheader against Dayton at the D.L. Phillips Softball Complex at noon.
