Charlotte Splits Doubleheader with A-10 Foe Rhode Island

49ers Shutout Rams 4-0 in Second Game to Move to 4-1 in Conference Action

March 29, 2008

Box Score

Kingston, R.I. - Behind a three-run first inning anchored by an RBI single by junior shortstop Cee Brooks, the Charlotte 49ers (18-17; A-10: 4-1) shutout conference foe Rhode Island (8-19; A-10: 2-4) 4-0 Saturday afternoon in the second game of their doubleheader after falling 4-2 in the early game. Sophomore pitcher Emily Jeffery held Rhode Island to just five hits in her late game performance, tallying three strikeouts.

In the first game, an RBI from junior catcher Jaime West and an unearned run from Brooks on a wild pitch in the fourth inning would even the slate after Rhode Island built a two-run lead in the top of the first, but the Rams retaliated in the fifth with two unanswered runs to take the game. Freshman pitcher Katy Hackett worked six innings, allowing five hits and four runs (two earned) with four strikeouts.

Freshman designated player Whitney Williams led the 49er offensive effort with two hits, while junior third baseman Jenny Rumbles, sophomore outfielder Serena Smith and sophomore utility Keri Palma each contributed one apiece.

In the second game, Brooks' RBI would open scoring in the bottom of the first before she would come home on a wild pitch and West would collect an unearned run after Palma reached on a throwing error by the Rhode Island pitcher. Charlotte rounded out scoring in the fifth when a Smith single to centerfield would score junior first baseman Alyssa Kemmerer.

The 49ers return to action tomorrow for a doubleheader at 2007 A-10 regular season and tournament champion Massachusetts.
