Spartanburg, S.C. - Behind a shutout from sophomore pitcher Emily Jeffery in game one, marking her third shutout of the season, the Charlotte 49ers (20-19; A-10: 3-3) swept USC Upstate (19-12) 1-0, 6-3 in doubleheader action Wednesday afternoon at Cyrill Stadium. Junior second baseman Sarah Malene and sophomore outfielder Serena Smith led the team with two RBI apiece.
In the first game, Jeffery held USC Upstate to no runs on seven hits, striking out five and walking none in a complete seven innings.
Charlotte made good use of its two hits in the fourth inning with the game scoreless, as Malene walked and Williams reached on a double to left center before a Smith RBI single up the middle brought Malene home. Despite USC Upstate attempting a late rally, accumulating five hits through the remainder of the contest, Jeffery and the 49er defense maintained the shutout for the win.
In the second game, Charlotte opened scoring early, bringing in two runs in the first, before junior third baseman Jenny Rumbles drove in the game-winning run off an RBI triple to right center in the top of the fourth. Malene and junior designated player Jaime West anchored the 49er offensive effort with two hits apiece, while freshman pitcher Katy Hackett took the win in relief for sophomore Gina Allen.
Smith put Charlotte on the board in the first with an RBI single to centerfield before scoring on a wild pitch after advancing to second on a passed ball and a groundout from sophomore utility Keri Palma. USC Upstate answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, but the 49ers would even the score in the top of the third off an RBI single from West to centerfield before running up the score in the fourth with Rumbles' RBI triple and a Malene RBI single up the middle. Charlotte rounded out scoring the sixth when Malene was hit by a pitch with bases loaded, scoring senior outfielder Emily Forbes, who reached on single to shortstop and advanced on a single by freshman Natalyn Blanton and infield error.
