Hackett Pitches Three-Hit Shutout to Stifle George Washington 8-0

Smith Tallies Three RBI Off Two Hits

April 18, 2008

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - Behind a three-hit shutout by freshman Katy Hackett, marking her second collegiate shutout, and a three-RBI performance by sophomore outfielder Serena Smith, the Charlotte 49ers (26-22; A-10: 8-3) defeated conference foe George Washington (8-22; A-10: 4-7) 8-0 in five innings Friday afternoon at the Mount Vernon Complex. A five-run third inning, anchored by a 2 RBI Smith double to right center, propelled the 49ers past the Colonials, moving the all-time series record to 5-1.

Hackett, the Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie of the Week, held George Washington to one hit, coming in the second, through four innings. She struck out six batters and walked one.

Charlotte collected nine hits in the contest, with offensive contributions from freshman outfielder Whitney Williams (three), junior second baseman Sarah Malene (two), Smith (two), junior catcher Jaime West and senior outfielder Emily Forbes.

After being held scoreless through two innings on one hit, the 49ers opened scoring in the third when freshman Kendra McCall reached on an infield error, advancing on a sacrifice bunt from junior third baseman Jenny Rumbles and Malene single to center field before scoring on an outfield error. Williams followed with a single to the Colonial shortstop, stealing second before a Smith double brought her and Malene home. The 49er offensive barrage continued as West doubled down the left field line, bringing in Smith, before coming home off an error and fielder's choice.

Charlotte added another run in the fourth with an RBI single up the middle by Smith before and two more in the fifth when junior shortstop Cee Brooks scored on a pass ball and Forbes came home on a McCall sacrifice fly to right field.

George Washington attempted a late rally in the bottom of the fifth with back-to-back singles, but was shut down when Holst hit into a double play to end the game.

The 49ers continue their series with the Colonials tomorrow afternoon with a single game at noon before heading to Fordham for a doubleheader Sunday.
