Washington, D.C. - Behind a seven-run sixth inning and a two-hitter thrown by sophomore Emily Jeffery, the Charlotte 49ers (27-22; A-10: 9-3) handed conference foe George Washington (8-23; A-10: 4-8) an 8-1 loss Saturday afternoon at the Mount Vernon Complex. Sophomore utility Keri Palma led the 49er offensive attack with three RBI on the day, including a bomb down the left field line.
Jeffery, who moves to 14-9 on the season, faced 25 batters in her seven complete innings in the circle, giving up just one run on two hits, two walks and one error while striking out nine.
Charlotte collected its eight runs on 12 hits in the contest. Senior outfielder Emily Forbes and junior Jenny Rumbles led the way with three hits apiece, while freshman designated player Whitney Williams and Palma contributed two each. Sophomore outfielder Serena Smith and junior shortstop Cee Brooks both chipped in with one hit.
After trading home runs in the top of the second and bottom of the fourth, the 49ers put George Washington away for good in the sixth, scoring seven runs on six hits. After singling through the left side, Brooks was brought home by a Forbes double to right center for the game-winning run. Forbes, who advanced to third on an infield error, scored on a wild pitch during freshman pinch hitter Kendra McCall's at-bat before she herself came home off a Williams single to left field. Williams and Malene were eventually pushed across the plate off a fielding error by the Colonial short stop before Charlotte poured on additional runs with a two-RBI Palma double to right field.
