Bronx, N.Y. - Despite holding onto a shutout until the bottom of the seventh in the second game of doubleheader action, the Charlotte 49ers (27-24; A-10: 9-5) dropped two to Atlantic 10 foe Fordham (23-22; A-10: 7-5) at Bahoshy Field Sunday afternoon. Sophomore outfielder Serena Smith produced the lone 49er RBI of the day in the top of the first in the 2-1 late loss after Charlotte had been held to one run on two hits in the first game's 3-1 decision.
In the early game, freshman pitcher Katy Hackett gave up three runs on six hits, no errors and one walk while striking out one in six innings in the circle.
After Fordham tallied all three of its runs in the bottom of the second on two hits and two fielding errors, Charlotte answered in the third when senior outfielder Emily Forbes doubled to left field before crossing the plate for the unearned run when freshman Kendra McCall reached second on an infield throwing error. The 49ers attempted to even the slate in the fourth leaving two on base and again in the sixth leaving Smith, who singled to center field, on base, but were unable to complete the rally.
In the second game, Charlotte nearly bounced back as sophomore pitcher Emily Jeffery limited the Rams to no runs on four hits through six innings before Fordham rallied in the bottom of the seventh to take the win. The 49ers collected three hits in the contest, with junior second baseman Sarah Malene, junior shortstop Cee Brooks and Smith contributing one apiece.
