BRONX, N.Y. – In the bottom of the seventh, the Charlotte 49ers loaded up the bags as they looked to put together a late inning rally and propel themselves to the consolation final with Massachusetts later in the day. But, the Niner bats fell silent with the bags full as the squad was unable to overcome a three-run fourth from the Saint Joseph’s Hawks as the 49ers fell by a 3-0 tally to end the season in today’s Atlantic 10 tournament elimination game.
Through the first six innings, Charlotte’s bats were only able to manufacture two hits before sophomore Whitney Williams got things started with a leadoff single in the seventh.
Junior Serena Smith would follow things up with a single of her own to put Williams in scoring position with no outs as the Niners looked to kick start a late-game rally.
Following a Tenaya Tucker fielder’s choice, the Niners had runners at first and second with Cee Brooks stepping to the plate.
Brooks would tag a single through the left side to load the bases as the 49ers applied the pressure to the Hawks.
Charlotte would be unable to knot the game up as a fielder’s choice from Keri Palma was followed by a groundout from Jaime West as the Niners closed the season with a 3-0 loss to Saint Joseph’s.
At the plate, a 2-for-3 afternoon from Williams led the 49ers offense.
In the circle, Katy Hackett (8-5) picked up the loss, throwing four innings of action, allowing three runs.
