GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Charlotte 49ers softball team opened their 2009 fall schedule this past Sunday as they travelled to the campus of UNC Greensboro for a pair of games. Head Coach Aimee DeVos and the Niners took on the host school and East Carolina, but were unable to come away with a victory in the opening weekend.
In the first game, Charlotte fell to the Spartans of UNCG, 6-1, with the lone RBI coming from Tenaya Tucker, which scored Kendra McCall. Katy Hackett took the loss for the 49ers as she allowed three runs on four hits, while striking out four Spartan batters.
Tucker, McCall and Keri Palma all reached base with hits in the game, but were only able to score one run in the opening game. Gina Allen came in the game as a relief pitcher for Hackett after four innings of work.
In Charlotte’s second game of the day, the 49ers fell to East Carolina in extra innings as the Pirates won 1-0 in the eighth inning. Despite the loss, senior pitcher Emily Jeffery had an outstanding outing as she pitched seven scoreless innings, while striking out seven Pirates and only allowing three hits on the day.
East Carolina was able to manage the game’s lone run in the eighth as a runner was placed on second base to start the inning and the Pirates were able to get the base-runner home.
